Santa Fe Architecture
Santa Fe is the oldest and highest state capitol in the USA. Founded in 1610 as the capitol of the Spanish province of Neuvo Mexico, it continued as the capitol of the Mexican territory of Santa Fé de Nuevo México, then of the US territory of New Mexico and finally as the capitol when the territory became a state in 1912.

It is located 56 miles north of Albuquerque at an elevation of just over 7,000 feet, making it the highest state capitol and well

above runners-up Cheyenne (6K) and Denver (5.2K). In October the daytime temperatures average in the low 70’s with chilly evenings requiring a jacket. It is served by a good highway from Albuquerque (rental car), an hourly Albuquerque airport to Eldorado Hotel shuttle service (Sandia Shuttle, $25 pp one-way) as well as the light rail Rail Runner Express which costs $6. Cabs are necessary from Albuquerque airport to RRE depot in downtown Albuquerque ($10) but the only weekday afternoon departure is at 4 PM getting into the RRE Santa Fe Depot at 6 PM. Cab ride from RRE Santa Fe Depot to Eldorado Hotel is only $2 as it is just 3 blocks to the Eldorado but that can be an unpleasant walk hauling many bags. The only convenient RRE departure times from Santa Fe are 11:30 AM and 4 PM.

Eldorado Hotel
Santa Fe (literally 'holy faith' in Spanish), a city of 70,000, has hewn to a Spanish Territorial or Pueblo style of architecture giving the heart of the city a consistent and unique adobe color even if not consistently pueblo-like in construction (many external stucco surfaces are finished to look like adobe sometimes referred to as "faux-dobe"). It is arrayed around a central plaza like most Spanish cities which puts most attractions within walking distance of the just off the plaza location of the Eldorado Hotel.

It is a virtual hotbed of artists and artistry, sculptors and sculptures all displayed in the more than 250 galleries located in the city. Hiking trails, bike trails and museums abound.

The 219 room Eldorado Hotel and Spa is an AAA four diamond hotel with a 4-star restaurant, the Old House. It is constructed in the Pueblo-Revival architectural style fitting in nicely with the rest of Santa Fe. It is two blocks from the main city plaza and the Georgia O'Keeffe museum is right out the back door. The accommodations are first class which makes our room rate of $239 a value. The Eldorado's Web site is at www.eldoradohotel.com.
